be still and know i am god

We are told that there must be times when we are to still ourselves and become free from agitation, commotions and especially thoughts that disturb our peace. In this stillness we are best able to acknowledge our God and His superiority in our lives and circumstances.

The Hebrew word for still is raphah. it means to cease, to relax, refrain, let alone, be quiet and withdraw. This is such a needed practice in these days with so many disquieting things swirling about us which grab our thought life and take away our peace.

When we take time to be still, the primary blessing is that our God, Lord, and Savior Jesus becomes our focus. In these moments of quietness we see Him above all the disquieting things of this world and in this quietness, He restores our souls to peace.

But here is an additional blessing. The Hebrew word still is closely related to another Hebrew word rapha (no H) and it means to mend, heal, cure, repair and make whole. Can it be that the connection between our stillness before God (a drawing into Him) and our health are related?  He is the God that heals us of so many things. Christ our healer is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
