Christianity would be essentially powerless without the cross of Christ. Paul preaching in continuously. He declared he want to know nothing when sharing his faith, except Jesus Christ and Him crucified. The Cross was loathed by the Romans. It was a place of executing society's worse people. So, to look upon it as a place of boasting would confound the unbelievers. Paul said he would glory, boast, in nothing except Jesus Christ and Him crucified (Gal. 6:14). Why?
Three times in his letter to the Galatians, Paul speaks of the power of the cross to do a supernatural work necessary for Christian success.
First, in Gal. 2:20, he declares he is crucified with Christ. How is this possible seeing he was not even at the event? It is so because all of us who have put our faith in Christ going to the cross for us were baptized into Christ and this into His cross experience. In order to be buried with Christ we must first die. No one buries live people (Rom. 6:3). We who were baptized into Jesus were also baptized into His death. We died there when He did, no matter how long ago it took place. We accept this by faith and this determine our old man dead. Hallelujah!
Second, because we are Christ's, we have crucified by our own wills our flesh and all the old life it wishes to maintain (Gal. 5:24). This is what Jesus said we should do daily by taking up our cross daily and following Him (Luke 9:23). Why if we are dead do we have to do this? Because we live in bodies that retain in their members the desires to sin (Rom. 7:23). Our point of reference is the cross. We look to it and see our old body there and reckon it dead and then walk in the Spirit. Until we receive our new immortal bodies we still live in the old ones.
Third, the world, too, is crucified to us and us to it (Gal. 6:14). The world here means the system of life of fallen man with all of its thought patterns, lusts, and ways of living. If we have died, the world is dead to us and we cannot respond to it and it cannot have any influence on us.
All this truth is by faith in the work of the cross. If we put our faith there, Holy Spirit will enable us to walk in these truths.
As we begin to experience this, we too will BOAST in the cross.
